TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has officially commenced 4-nanometer chip production at its first fabrication facility in Arizona.

In an interview with Reuters on Friday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo highlighted the significance of this milestone. “For the first time in our country’s history, we are producing leading-edge four-nanometer chips on American soil with American workers, matching the yield and quality of production in Taiwan,” she said. Raimondo confirmed that production began in recent weeks, calling it a “historic achievement” that many doubted could happen. She also noted that the Commerce Department had to persuade TSMC to expand its investment in the U.S., saying, “It didn’t happen on its own… We had to convince TSMC that they would want to expand.”

TSMC significantly increased its investment in Arizona last year, committing an additional $25 billion, bringing the total investment to $65 billion. The company also announced plans to build a third fabrication facility in the state by 2030.

According to the report, TSMC plans to manufacture 2-nanometer chips at its second Arizona plant, with production expected to start in 2028. Additionally, the company has agreed to use its cutting-edge A16 chip manufacturing technology in Arizona.

This development aligns with the U.S. government’s efforts to strengthen domestic chip manufacturing. In 2022, Congress allocated $52.7 billion for semiconductor subsidies and tax credits. As part of this initiative, the Commerce Department successfully secured commitments from all five leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers to establish plants in the United States, Raimondo noted.
