Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Build Your Dreams (BYD) has dismissed reports claiming it is establishing a manufacturing facility in India. Recent media reports suggested that BYD was planning to set up a plant in Hyderabad for local EV production, but the company has refuted these claims.
According to The Bridge Chronicle, BYD clarified that while it continues to explore opportunities in India, it has no concrete plans to set up a manufacturing facility in Hyderabad or elsewhere. The company emphasized that any future investments would depend on market conditions and regulatory assessments.
Recent reports also speculated that BYD would invest ₹85,000 crore ($10 billion) in a large-scale manufacturing plant in India. Additionally, there were claims that Telangana government officials had earmarked 200 acres of land for BYD and that the company was considering a joint venture with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) for the project.
Sources suggested that BYD was evaluating locations in Telangana, with Hyderabad emerging as a potential site for the facility. According to reports, the proposed plant would span over 500 acres, with a production capacity of 600,000 vehicles by 2032. BYD was also rumored to be planning a battery manufacturing unit with a 20 GWh capacity.
Currently, BYD operates a small assembly unit in Tamil Nadu, where it produces electric buses. This is not the first time speculation about BYD’s plans to establish a manufacturing base in India has surfaced, but conflicting reports continue to create uncertainty about the company’s actual intentions.
BYD’s Expansion Strategy in India
Despite the uncertainty around a manufacturing facility, BYD remains committed to expanding its presence in India. In 2023, the company operated 27 dealerships nationwide and aims to increase this number to 47 by the end of this year. Its strategy includes strengthening its presence in major metropolitan areas while expanding into tier-II cities.
