India’s Electronics Manufacturing Milestone

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has achieved a significant milestone with the inauguration of Syrma SGS Technology’s advanced laptop assembly line in Chennai by Union Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw. Initially capable of producing 100,000 laptops annually, the facility aims to scale its capacity to 1 million units in the next 1-2 years. This development aligns with the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme for IT hardware, which has already driven ₹10,000 crore in production and created 3,900 jobs in just 18 months.

Impact of PLI 2.0 and Global Partnerships

Launched in May 2023, PLI 2.0 for IT hardware has significantly boosted production of devices like laptops, tablets, and servers. With an anticipated output of ₹3.5 lakh crore and 47,000 new jobs, the scheme is reshaping India’s IT hardware landscape. Syrma SGS’s partnership with Taiwanese tech giant Micro-Star International (MSI) further underscores India’s growing prominence in global manufacturing. The facility in Tamil Nadu is set to create 150-200 specialized jobs by FY26, strengthening the regional economy and enhancing India’s export capabilities.

Tamil Nadu’s Leadership and Future Growth

Tamil Nadu has emerged as a key player in India’s electronics boom, housing 47 manufacturing units and contributing approximately 30% of the country’s electronics exports. With initiatives like the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster in Sriperumbudur, the state is poised to attract investments of ₹8,700 crore and generate over 36,000 jobs. The inauguration of Syrma SGS’s assembly line is a pivotal step in reducing import reliance and positioning India as a global IT hardware manufacturing leader. With sustained growth under PLI 2.0, India is set to cement its place as a powerhouse in electronics manufacturing.
