India's Leading Magazine For Manufacturing Industries

In an exclusive conversation with Efficient Manufacturing, Mohal Lalbhai, Founder & CEO of Matter Motor, shares insights into the company’s “Innovate in India” strategy, its pioneering geared electric motorbike concept, and the future of EV mobility. Interviewed by Kaushal Dighavkar, he delves into Matter’s commitment to sustainability, manufacturing scale-up, and upcoming product innovations.

1.  MATTER has emphasised an “Innovate in India” approach. How has this strategy influenced your product development and market growth since the company’s inception?

At Matter, “Innovate in India” is not just a tagline; it’s part of our DNA. Right from the start, we realized that innovation specific to Indian conditions is the key to success in this market. Our flagship product, the AERA electric motorbike, is an example of this philosophy. The product is fully designed and developed in India, with a strong emphasis on addressing the extreme climate conditions and varied usage patterns common in the Indian market. All stages of development are maintained within the country, leveraging local talent and resources. This not only results in cost efficiencies but creates a product that resonates strongly with Indian consumers. This strategy has helped us build a robust ecosystem, from supply chain partnerships to R&D, while significantly contributing to India’s ambition of becoming a global EV hub. The approach has also catalysed our market growth by fostering trust and credibility among consumers who value domestically innovated and manufactured products. This would be further amplified through our emphasis on scalability, so that our solutions are both sustainable and economically viable to pave the way for Matter to lead the EV revolution not only in India but in other emerging markets.

2. With MATTER AERA yet to launch, what has motivated the introduction of the geared electric motorbike concept, and what unique advantages do you foresee for the product?

The concept of a geared electric motorbike, introduced through the AERA, is driven by our mission to bridge the gap between traditional motorbike enthusiasts and the EV revolution. Indian riders have a deep-rooted connection with geared motorbikes, and we saw an opportunity to preserve this experience while transitioning to cleaner, sustainable technology. The AERA’s geared system offers unparalleled control and performance, which are essential for enthusiasts who prioritise riding dynamics. It caters to a segment often overlooked by existing EV offerings, which tend to focus on automatic, urban-centric models. By combining the tactile joy of gear shifts with the technological advancements of an electric drivetrain, we are redefining the riding experience. Furthermore, the AERA’s advanced features—from its active liquid-cooled battery system to its innovative powertrain—underscore its readiness to meet the challenges of Indian roads. These innovations align with our vision to make EVs not just an alternative but a preferred choice for all riders, regardless of their lifestyle or preferences. With AERA, we are setting new benchmarks in performance, sustainability, and consumer satisfaction.

3. MATTER is committed to sustainability. Can you share your initiatives towards achieving carbon neutrality and promoting green energy adoption in both production and product offerings?

Sustainability is a fundamental principle at the core of Matter’s operations. Our comprehensive carbon-neutrality strategy covers every aspect, from product design to manufacturing processes

On the product side, we emphasize lifecycle sustainability. The AERA’s battery system, for instance, features liquid cooling and is designed with recyclability in mind. We are also exploring battery-swapping solutions to minimize waste and maximize resource utilization. Collaborations with like-minded partners further enhance our green technology capabilities by incorporating sustainable raw materials and energy-efficient supply chains. Matter has also partnered with Earth.org to amplify its sustainability efforts. Through this collaboration, we aim to promote awareness about green mobility and foster a culture of responsible and eco-friendly ridership. Our flagship initiative, AERATHON, is a testament to this commitment. By embarking on a 25,000 km journey across India, AERATHON connects communities, highlights the versatility of green mobility, and showcases how electric vehicles can drive a sustainable future. These initiatives collectively reflect our dedication to not just reducing our environmental footprint but also inspiring a broader movement toward carbon neutrality.

4. How are you scaling up manufacturing to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles in India and internationally?

Scaling up manufacturing is central to Matter’s growth strategy. We have invested heavily in building state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities equipped with advanced automation and precision engineering capabilities. These facilities are designed to handle high volumes without compromising on quality, ensuring that we can meet the growing demand both in India and in international markets. Our supply chain strategy is equally robust. By collaborating with local suppliers and fostering partnerships, we ensure a reliable and efficient flow of components. This localization not only minimizes reliance on imports but also aligns with our vision of “Innovating in India.” Additionally, the strong patent pipeline and R&D capabilities ensure that Matter remains at the forefront of innovation, enabling us to introduce groundbreaking products globally.

5. With more than 100 patents in the pipeline, how does MATTER’s approach to research and innovation differentiate you from your competitors in the EV industry?

Matter’s approach to research and innovation is rooted in addressing real-world challenges with practical solutions. Our 300+ intellectual properties and extensive patent pipeline are not mere numbers; they represent tangible advancements across key domains, including powertrain, vehicle engineering, and software integration. Unlike many competitors who focus on importing technologies, Matter’s R&D efforts are entirely indigenous, enabling us to innovate specifically for the Indian market. This focus ensures that our solutions are optimised for local conditions, such as high temperatures and variable terrain. Our active liquid-cooled battery technology, for example, is a result of this targeted innovation and is a game-changer in the industry. The “Innovation Loop” at Matter—assess the need, address the need, accomplish the change—ensures a structured yet agile approach to product development. By fostering an ecosystem of collaboration with academic institutions, industry experts, and government bodies, we remain ahead of the curve in integrating emerging technologies. This holistic, need-driven approach to innovation sets us apart, allowing us to deliver solutions that are not only advanced but also relevant and sustainable.

6. What can consumers expect from upcoming models such as EXE and UT, and how do these new releases align with MATTER’s long-term vision for electric mobility?

At MATTER, our upcoming models, EXE and UT, embody our commitment to addressing diverse mobility needs and advancing sustainable solutions. Here’s what these models offer:

  • EXE: Designed for the urban commuter, the EXE redefines the premium city commute experience. With advanced technology, sleek design, and user-centric features, it delivers a seamless and efficient ride through urban landscapes.
  • UT: A utilitarian model tailored for last-mile transportation, the UT focuses on durability, practicality, and cost-effectiveness. It’s a mobility solution engineered to meet the needs of individuals and businesses relying on efficient last-mile connectivity.

Both models will showcase our foray into battery-swapping mechanisms, providing unmatched flexibility and reducing downtime for users. Aligned with MATTER’s long-term vision, these releases reflect our dedication to innovative, commuter-focused solutions that address real-world mobility challenges while prioritizing sustainability and inclusivity. They mark a significant step in our mission to empower every journey with smarter, greener, and more adaptable electric mobility.
